ROSEVILLE (WWJ) – Classes are now back in session at Roseville Middle School after the building was evacuated due to a bomb threat.
The situation unfolded around 7:10 a.m. Tuesday when administrators received a threat via phone and a suspicious bag was found outside of the school, located on Martin Road just east of Groesbeck Highway.READ MORE: Michigan Matters: Theaters & Politics
“It was a bomb threat and it was a secretary who took the call,” John Kment, Roseville Schools Superintendent, told WWJ’s Russ McNamara. “The police were called and they responded immediately.
Students were moved to neighboring elementary school on the same property while officials searched the middle school.
“The police brought in several cars and officers. They closed the streets around the building, they brought in the dog and searched the buildings,” said Kment. “Nothing was found.”
Around 9:30 a.m., police gave the “all clear” and students were allowed to return to their classrooms.
Administrators told parents they could leave their kids in school for the rest of the day or take them home. About 550 students attend the school.READ MORE: CDC: New Listeria Outbreak Tied To 23 Illnesses, 1 Death
“Oh yeah, I feel fine with it,” said one dad, who let his kids stay at school .”When I got to the scene the dogs were already running the building and stuff like that. You know, it’s just some stupid kid wanting to make a prank, wanting to get out of school, you know what I’m saying.”
Other parents couldn’t get their children out of there fast enough.
“There’s just too much going on in the world,” said one woman. “It’s not that I don’t trust the school, I just don’t trust the situation period.”
Kment said the district’s technology department is now trying to determine exactly who made the threat.
“We’re seeing if we can trace the phone call, and the police are also doing an investigating through whatever channels they have to see if they can identify where the phone call came from,” he said. “We hope that the police are able to track who did the phone call.”
