East Lansing School District Reports Elevated Lead Levels

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A mid-Michigan school district says high lead levels have been found coming from 31 faucets at seven of its buildings.

A letter to parents of the East Lansing public school district says most samples that exceed federal standards for lead were taken from faucets in parts of buildings not used by or accessible to students.

Tuesday's letter says the district has turned off water to faucets accessible to students and has contacted the Ingham County Health Department to develop a follow-up plan.

The Lansing State Journal reports the tests were ordered after a sink at Glencairn Elementary was tested in late January after someone noticed a small sticker saying the faucet should be flushed to reduce lead levels.

Michigan schools have boosted testing amid Flint's lead-tainted water crisis.
