Founder Of Detroit-Based Drug Recovery Program Getting Honor
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The founder of a Detroit-based drug recovery program is being recognized at the White House amid efforts to respond to a nationwide problem with prescription opioid and heroin abuse.
Andre Johnson, who is president and CEO of the Detroit Recovery Project, will be recognized April 29 among other "Champions of Change," according to reports.
Johnson, a former drug and alcohol user who has been in recovery for nearly 28 years, started the Detroit Recovery Project in 2005. He says its success is based in part on relying on people with drug experience themselves in helping others facing problems.
The White House says that over the last decade Johnson's organization has received more than $15 million in grants to provide prevention, treatment and recovery services.
