Can Professional Soccer Work In Detroit? 'Yes, But' Says One Soccer Team Owner

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and entrepreneur Dan Gilbert are teaming up to bring major league soccer to Detroit. In a statement Tuesday, the basketball team owning rivals said their plans have the support of Major League Soccer, which is planning a league expansion.

Alex Wright is the owner of the successful minor league team, Detroit City F.C.

"There is a ton of potential for professional soccer to find success in Detroit," said Wright, "but there's a blueprint and that blueprint might not be the same as we are familiar with - other pro-sports -- it has to remain community focused - it has to have a relationship - a real relationship with supporters, the folks who give their blood, sweat and tears and passion to the game."

He says with a city that already holds four professional sports teams -- the inclusion of a professional, successful soccer team will have to create and atmosphere unlike any other; "a lot goes into it, just because we're big doesn't mean it's going to work."

As the heavyweights put together an investment group, Wright says he'd like to be called to the table.
