Bus Service Returns To Belle Isle With Stop Near Attractions

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit has resumed bus service to Belle Isle in a move that allows riders to visit the island park without paying the usual cost of entry.

The Detroit Department of Transportation and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources say service started last Saturday.

The new bus service provides access for residents, visitors and staff to get on and off the island by simply paying the standard $1.50 bus fare with no additional park entry fees. There's one bus stop on the island, located near attractions such as the conservatory, the aquarium and the giant slide.

"We are glad to provide access for residents to such a unique destination," DDOT's Scharron Rambus said in a statement. "Belle Isle has been a place where special memories have been made, and we are honored to continue that tradition."

Customers can utilize the service via the #12 Conant bus route Monday through Friday between 5:50 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Service to Belle Isle will run roughly every 50 minutes.

Typically, a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Belle Isle. That costs $11 a year for Michigan-registered vehicles and includes access to all state parks.

The city previously discontinued bus service to Belle Isle in 2007, according to The Detroit News.
