Traffic Alert: I-275 Prep Work Expected Through Weekend Before Total Closure On Monday

LIVONIA (WWJ) - I-275 might not shut down until Monday morning, but prep work will cause plenty of temporary closures before then.

Throughout the weekend, crews will begin preparation to close southbound I-275 by painting new lines and lanes, placing signage, and moving barrels into place. This will cause ramp and lane closures through the weekend.

The earlier closures will allow crews more time to perform the complicated work of implementing the closures and detours while traffic volumes are low, which is safer for everyone. The new traffic patterns will be in place in time for the Monday morning rush hour.

The updated closure time for I-275 is now 12:01 a.m. Monday, May 2. At that time, southbound I-275 will shut down, along with all the entrance ramps to southbound I-275 between I-96/I-696/M-5 and 5 Mile.

Once the closure is in place, eastbound I-96 traffic will continue onto I-696 to southbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) to southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway), then westbound I-96 back to southbound I-275.

Currently, westbound 7 Mile Road is closed over I-275, with traffic detoured northbound to 8 Mile Road. It is expected to reopen before this weekend.

Work will continue on two lanes of northbound I-275, including the shoulders, during weeknights and weekends to allow crews to prepare the road surface for upcoming work and later lane closures.

Meadowbrook Road is now open and Haggerty Road is closed over I-96/I-696/I-275 (three bridges). Haggerty Road is expected to reopen before the southbound I-275 closure goes into effect.

Project Details

This $75 million investment includes replacing 88 lane miles of concrete pavement on I-275 from north of Five Mile Road to the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange, including all the ramps on "Mile" roads and at the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange. The project also includes shoulder work on I-275, concrete repairs on I-696, repairs on 16 bridges, drainage improvements, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) work. Toebe Construction is the contractor.
