Plan Set For Forest Management Along Alpena County Trail

ALPENA, Mich. (AP) — State regulators have reached a decision on forest management along a trail network known as the Chippewa Hills Pathway in Alpena County.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the final plan includes a 50-percent reduction in harvest acreage and a requirement that harvesting take place on just one side of the trail in many locations.

Also, it reduces the number of spots where equipment will cross trails. It says the DNR will work with the Ruffed Grouse Society to plant shrubs and other fruit-bearing plants that will benefit wildlife.

The DNR says its decision came after an 18-month study process that included meetings with representatives of groups including industry, hunters, mountain bikers, trail users and local governments.
