Star-Studded "Married But Single" Arrives In Detroit Mother's Day Weekend

DETROIT (WWJ) - Just in time for Mother's Day weekend, the hit stageplay "Married but Single" arrives at the Music Hall in downtown Detroit. It's the brainchild of playwright Je'Caryous Johnson, who tells WWJ's Terri Lee his latest project is a romantic comedy about the complexities of relationships.

"You have married people who are looking at single people's lives and wanting to be them; and you have single people who are looking at married people and wishing they could be married," Johnson said. "So, I kind of poke fun at how we always are looking at the grass being greener on the other side, but when we actually make it to the other side, we realize that, you know, sometimes grass is green; it's a little bit of weeds, too. It just depends on being with the right person; not just 'A' person."

The ensemble cast includes LisaRaye McCoy, who rose to fame in "The Players Club;" actor Clifton Powell, who's appeared in a number of Hollywood blockbusters.

McCoy's character, Sharon, is in a relationship with the man of her dreams, yet, things still aren't what she hoped they would be.

"He has this CD that I've invested in, but he hasn't quite made it. But, I believe in him. And, like most women support their men who have dreams, she's been doing this for three years, and so it comes to a point where she wants a commitment from him and he's not really quite there."

Powell, who's long list of credits includes "Ray," starring Jamie Foxx, "Friday" and the hit TV show, "CSI," has more than enough upcoming projects to keep him busy.

With such a hectic schedule, what attracted him to this project?

"The writing is incredible, and a chance to work with my friend, LisaRaye, and Carl Payne and Sam Logan, Terrell Carter. I worked with Je"Caryous a few years ago and loved the work; and for me, it's really reading the script, and the storyline. As Je'Caryous just said, LisaRaye just said, it's an incredible journey that you'll go on, especially if you're married or if you're single, thinking about getting married."

Before arriving in Detroit, "Married but Single" premiered at the Warner Theatre in Washington, DC to five sold-out performances. The shows at the Music Hall are on Saturday, May 7, and Sunday, May 8. Click here for ticket information.
