New Roller Coaster Debuts Monday In Macomb County

CLINTON TWP. (CBS Detroit) - It may not be the tallest or the fastest — but, for metro Detroiters, it's quite a bit closer to home.

A first in Macomb County, the Loop roller coaster debuted Monday afternoon at C.J. Barrymore's on Hall Road near Groesbeck in Clinton Township.

Billed as "short, fast and fun," the thrill ride tops out at a mere 36 feet in height, but features two drops and a 360-degree loop "that scares you like the big coasters."

It's situated between the driving range and mini golf course at the park, which also features a bowling alley, arcade, bumper cars, bumper boats, a rock climbing wall, go karts and batting cages. [View a park map]

Barrymore's owner Rick Iceberg says the ride was purchased from an amusement park on the Jersey shore.

Talking to WWJ's Jason Scott, he described the experience.

"Once you get up there you realize, well, 36 feet is a pretty good little distance, and then the first drops you really fast and you hit about 40, 45 miles an hour," Iceburg said. "So the adrenaline gets going immediately, and then you go a couple spins and then boom, all of a sudden you're in the loop, and then you're really disorientated and then you come out of the loop and it gets really fast at the bottom."

Riders must be at least 56 inches tall or 50 inches tall with an adult to ride the Loop.

Ride tickets cost $7.50 each but will be a little cheaper if you buy a ticket package. The coaster is included in group and holiday wristband specials, according to the Barrymore's Facebook page.

Scott, who took a ride, described the Loop as "exciting" noting that it "mussed (his) hair."

Reaction from other park visitors Monday evening was mixed.

Brook Stewart of Macomb, there with her son, wanted nothing to do with it.

"We're not going to go on that! We're too scared — upside down, the loop-d-loop!" she said. "That's $7 for a minute-and-a-half, but no. We're just chickens."

Hours Monday are 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. [Get more hours info and directions]Anyone concerned about structural integrity and the like should be aware the ride did pass multiple inspections by the State of Michigan.

According to reporters, a second roller coaster at Barrymore's is in the works.
