Golf Tournament Will Benefit 'Simply Give' Hunger Relief Project

DETROIT (WWJ) - Meijer announcing plans to hold their third annual LPGA Tournament to benefit their Simply Give hunger relief non-profit.

Celebrities, pro-golfers and even pro-hockey players are expected at the event.

Meijer's Christina Fetcher says the tournament is a major fundraiser to help supply area food pantries.

"As a retailer, feeding the hungry is our most important philanthropic purpose and so we wanted to make sure that our tournament benefited the Simply Give program because it is truly a focus of what we do ... so many people continue to struggle to put food on the table," says Fetcher.

Summertime can be a stressful time for families which count on programs during the school year for a healthy breakfast or lunch for their kids.

"The summer time is so important and so this spring campaign will help our food pantry partners stock up for summer," she says. "When summer comes around -- kids don't have as many opportunities to get free or reduced meals at schools so families in need tend to rely a little heavier on our food pantry partners."

The tournament has raised $1.3 million in the first two years of Simply Give.

The event takes place June 14-19 at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids.
