Bear Killed After Going Near Campers In Western Michigan

BALDWIN, Mich. (AP) - The state says authorities fatally shot a young bear after it went near a group of campers in western Michigan and wouldn't leave.

MLive.com reports the bear shot Sunday north of Baldwin was believed to be 1 to 3 years old and its carcass was taken to a lab for analysis. Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife technician Katie Keen says the bear was shot on private property.

Keen says about eight people, including children, were camping in tents and a camper when the bear came near their site. She says the bear "repeatedly came in and showed aggressive behavior toward humans" and "would come back continually."

Keen says bears usually leave after food sources are removed and humans scare them off, but the bear wouldn't be frightened away.
