Detroit Red Wings Hosting 'Hockeytown 5K' As Part Of Farewell To Joe Louis Arena [VIDEO]

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to say goodbye to Joe Louis Arena in true Hockeytown fashion.

The Detroit Red Wings are hosting the Hockeytown 5K on Saturday, September 10, beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Come dressed in your favorite Red Wings jerseys and apparel and stroll down an incredible waterfront course, along Atwater Street and the Riverfront Trail, which ends at "center ice" under the video board at Joe Louis Arena.

Red Wings players and alumni will be in attendance along the course and inside the arena to cheer runners on throughout the entire experience, and all finishers will receive a Joe Louis Arena-inspired limited-edition commemorative medal.

The fun doesn't end at the finish line, either. Stick around for a post-race 5K Festival, which includes special photo opportunities with retired jersey and championship banners, Q&A sessions, autograph signings, a Red Wings locker room tour, interactive hockey games, prize giveaways and more.

Entry fees range from $50 to $79, depending on which package you choose. Click here for more information.

The Iconic Course

Runners and walkers will gather at the bottom of the steps outside the Gordie Howe Entrance at The Joe on Steve Yzerman Drive. From there, the 5K will begin at 8 a.m. up Atwater Street to St. Aubin Street and back along the River Walk and through the doors of Joe Louis Arena toward the finish line at center ice.

The Epic Finish

The finish line for the race is on the covered ice of The Joe, just below the video board. As you run into the building, you and your family in the stands will be able to see your name on the big screen just before you cross the line and receive your commemorative finisher's medal.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three overall male and female athletes.

1st Place: Team-Signed Red Wings Jersey
2nd Place: Player-Signed Hockey Stick
3rd Place: Player-Signed 8x10 Photo

Spectators

Anyone wishing to watch family or friends in the race are more than welcome to attend. There will be spectator areas at the start and finish lines, and at various spots along the course. All doors to Joe Louis Arena will be open. There will be a suggested $5 entry donation for adults at the door, and spectators under the age of 18 receive free entry. All of the proceeds from that donation will go directly to the Detroit Red Wings Foundation.

All 5K participants and spectators can park inside the Joe Louis Arena Parking Garage for $5 per car.
