"Take Me Home Huey" Traveling Chopper Sculpture Visits Metro Detroit

DEARBORN (WWJ) - Huey is in metro Detroit just for the weekend.

The military chopper shot down twice over Vietnam serving as a med-evac unit has been turned into a traveling sculpture called "Take Me Home Huey."

Artist Steve Maloney discovered the chopper in a bone yard and made it into a work dedicated to the 2.7 million Americans who served there.

He's extremely proud of this piece.

"To see the reaction of these people thanking everyone, thanks us for the project, it's heartwarming," Maloney said.

Marine veteran Donnie Phipps of Taylor and dozens of fellow bikers escorted the sculpture to The Henry Ford in Dearborn, where it will be on display in front of the bell tower through Monday, July 4.

"Hopefully they're take away the sacrifices that were given for the freedoms that they enjoy on this 4th of July weekend," he told WWJ's Ron Dewey.

Phipps, whose father served in Vietnam, called it an "honor and a blessing" to lead the escort from the state line to Dearborn.
