Toddler Shot During Midnight Fireworks Party On Detroit's East Side; 1 In Custody
DETROIT (WWJ) - One person has been arrested after a 2-year-old child was shot at a midnight "fireworks party" on Detroit's east side.
The shooting took place around 11:30 p.m. Monday as several families gathered to celebrate Independence Day outside of a car wash on Harper Avenue near Dickerson Avenue.
"Some men came to the party, they were asked to leave. As they left the party, for some reason they elected to fire shots at the car wash," Detroit Police Commander Charles Mahone told WWJ's Charlie Langton.
A 2-year-old girl who was sitting in a car was injured in the gunfire. She was rushed to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the side, and was last reported in critical condition.
"The grandmother was with the child, and the child was properly restrained in a car seat -- they were not the focus of the shots that were fired," said Mahone. "They just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Mahone said a dark-colored van left the scene.
No other injuries were reported
Late Tuesday afternoon, Detroit police said a suspect wanted in connection with the shooting was in custody. No details about the suspect were released.
