Thousands Outraged By Police Shootings March Through Downtown Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) -- Joining with other cities across the nation, thousands gathered for a rally in downtown Detroit on Friday to protest against the recent shootings of black men by police.
A crowd of a few thousand gathered at Campus Martius Park to speak out, express their outrage and to offer solutions to the problem they say of some police officers killing black men.
Amanda Wisniewski of Hamtramck was one of many demonstrators who held a signs that read "Black Lives Matter."
"I wake up every day and I don't have to worry about my father being gunned down or being pulled over for a broken tail light and not coming home -- that's not a reality that I face as a white person and that's not fair, that's not right," Wisniewski said.
Organizers stressed that the protest was not about hating the police, but more about pointing out the wrong of the very few.
A very heavy police presence was on hand, which kept watch over the mostly peaceful protest that ended up marching through downtown area. There were no reports of any incidents during the demonstration.
National outrage broke out this week after two black men were killed at the hands of white police officers in Louisiana and Minnesota.
Days later, five police officers were killed by sniper fire in Dallas during a protest.
