Teen Sentenced For Breaking Into Girl's Bedroom, Raping And Beating Her

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison in connection with the slaying and sexual assault of a teenage girl in her east side Detroit home.

The Detroit News reports Monday that Darian Winfield was sentenced after last month's conviction on charges of first-degree murder, second-degree criminal sexual conduct and home invasion.

Winfield previously confessed in video statements to police that he entered the 17-year-old girl's bedroom on Jan. 6, 5500-block of Radnor Street, raped her and beat her severely in the head.

The girl died five days later of head injuries.

Winfield also is charged in two other cases that include charges of assault with intent to murder.

Authorities say one involved a 39-year-old woman who was stabbed with a steak knife on Dec. 30 in her home, just down the street from where the 17-year-old was attacked. In that case the victim testified during a district court hearing that she used a stun gun to escape.

Another case involved an attack on a woman out walking on Dec. 15 about a mile away at Mack and Cadieux in Grosse Pointe Park.
