HAZMAT Team Investigates Mysterious White Smoke In Wixom

WIXOM (WWJ) - Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of a mysterious plume of smoke that caused a scare in Wixom Monday.

Pontiac Trail was closed to traffic from Wixom Rd. to Old Creek for about six hours early in the morning after the unknown white vapor was spotted above the Korex Corporation — a detergent factory.

Along with the roadway, area businesses were shut down by police and an Oakland County HAZMAT team was called to the scene.

Lt. Ron Moore told WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton and other reporters, the air was tested and found to be safe.

"They have positively determined that it is nontoxic in nature, Per our firefighter command — our firefighters on scene at the command post there — they said it is safe to open up the roadways," Moore said.

The all clear was given before 9 a.m.

Later in the morning, however, investigators remained on the scene.

'The firefighters and the HAZMAT technicians, they are still looking into how this happened in the first place, how we can prevent it in the future, and trying to determine exactly what the combination was of product that caused this plume," Moore said.

There were no injuries or illnesses reported in connection with the incident.
