Heat Wave Ahead: Temperatures Could Feel Like 105º In Metro Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - There's a heat wave on the way that could bring temperatures up as high as 100 degrees in metro Detroit.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Dave Bowers says we'll be chasing some all-time records.

"High pressure is in charge much of the week — so what's reasonably comfortable now just gets to be hot and steamy here by the latter part of the week," Bowers said.

"It's just seasonably warm with bright sunshine tomorrow and Wednesday; but by Thursday and Friday that high gives up and we get back into a southwesterly flow of just hot, steamy air."

Bowers said the high in the Detroit area will hang out at around 91 degrees on Thursday, following by a possible record-tying 96 or higher on Friday with real-feel readings stretching all the way up to 105 degrees — along with a storm or two.

To the west of us, the National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Watch for Chicago and surrounding areas in effect Thursday afternoon through Friday evening — when temperatures are expected to reach into the high 90s, while feeling more like it's 105 to 115 degrees.

The NWS is reminding Chicago area residents to avoid prolonged sun exposure due to risk of heat-related illnesses, to drink plenty of fluids, to keep pets and children in air-conditioned rooms whenever possible, and to check on elderly loved ones and neighbors.

The Excessive Heat Watch has not yet been issued for Southeast Michigan, but AccuWeather will be keeping an eye on things as the system creeps closer to metro Detroit.

In the meantime, Bowers says, high pressure that's settled in from south central Canada "will keep us reasonably comfortable" through mid-week.
