Man Charged With Murder After Child Injured In 2002 Dies

LANSING (WWJ/AP) - A former Michigan man who served more than three years in prison for injuring his baby daughter in 2002 has been charged with murder after she died last year.

The Lansing State Journal reports 33-year-old old Marcus Claudius Oglesby was charged with murder this month. The Runnemede, New Jersey, man was returned to Michigan and is being held without bond.

His daughter, Keyaria Oglesby, suffered bleeding in her brain and as a result was never able to walk, talk, hear or be able to swallow or feed herself.

Court records say a jury in 2003 convicted the former Lansing resident of second-degree child abuse. He'd been living with the girl's mother in an apartment and was alone with the child when she was hurt.

Oglesby, who was 19 years old at the time of the alleged crime, has said the injuries were accidental. He testified in 2003 that he was playing with the girl and playfully tossing her in the air and catching her when she slipped out of his hands. He knocked on doors to other apartment units until someone answered and borrowed a phone to call 911.

A pediatrician argued that injuries to both sides of the child's face  were "classic for abuse" and that there was almost no chance it could have been an accident, according to the newspaper.

The girl died Nov. 29, 2015, at age 13 and an autopsy determined her death stemmed from circumstances related to the abuse case.
