Police Save Unresponsive Man Surrounded By Drugs, Pipes, Syringe, Guns

BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) - What started as a simple welfare check ended in a life-saving situation and drug bust for Bloomfield Township police.

Police say the incident unfolded on May 9, when officers were called to the area of Wye Oak and Inkster roads, just south of Maple Road, on a welfare check. Officers arrived in the area and found an incoherent woman who appeared to be under the influence of narcotics, according to police. She was dirty, shoeless, and was attempting to make a bed out of pillows on a resident's front porch.

Officers spoke to the 20-year-old woman and discovered that she lives at a home nearly two miles away, on Hedgewood Drive near Walnut Lake Road, with her boyfriend. As the woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment, officers went to her residence.

When police arrived, they noticed blood on the outside and inside of the home. The homeowner's daughter arrived a short time later and let the officers into the home. Once inside, police say the officers found 46-year-old Ricky Kevonian lying in bed with marijuana pipes, crack pipes and a syringe nearby.

Police say Kevonian was unresponsive, moaning and gasping for air, so officers administered the opiate antidote Narcan in an attempt to revive him. After he came to, Kevonian was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Officers executed a search warrant at the Hedgewood home and found approximately 350 grams of marijuana, 545 grams of marijuana wax, 118 grams of psychedelic mushrooms, a half gram of cocaine, miscellaneous prescription opiates, two shotguns and an AR-15 rifle, according to police.

On July 25, Kevonian was arraigned at the 48th District Court on several charges including: possession with intent to deliver psilocin (7-year felony),  possession with intent to deliver marijuana (4-year felony), possession of cocaine less than 25 grams (4-year felony), and three counts of possession of a firearm in commission of a felony (each a 2-year felony).

Kevonian remains lodged at the Oakland County Jail on a $50,000 bond. He's due back in court on August 9.
