Man Held After Dumping Unknown Oily Substance On Wastenaw County Roadway

SUPERIOR TOWNSHIP (WWJ/AP) - Wastenaw County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a man after he was allegedly seen dumping an oily substance along a local road.

The man was pouring the material along a half-mile stretch of Harris Road near Geddes in Superior Township Monday morning, according to authorities.

The Superior Township Fire Department told WWJ Newsradio 950 there's no danger to the public, but that "a lot" of it was dumped — although they're not sure at this time exactly how much or what it is.

Investigators talking to the Ann Arbor News said that the substance could be a mix of motor oil and vegetable oil.  Sgt. Keith Flores said samples will be analyzed.

It's unclear if what, if any, charges will be filed. Police are working to determine whether there's any environmental damage.

The suspect's name was not released.

The newspaper says the roadway remains open to traffic.
