Lawmaker Up For Re-Election To Face Trial In Loan Fraud Case

DETROIT (AP) - A Michigan lawmaker who won the Democratic primary election last week has been ordered to stand trial in an alleged scheme to get a loan.

State Rep. Brian Banks of Harper Woods is accused of submitting fraudulent pay stubs to get a $3,000 loan in 2010. A witness testified Tuesday that she was asked by Banks to send the pay stubs and a letter to a credit union.

Banks denies the charges, and his lawyer says the investigation is tainted by politics.

Banks won the Democratic primary in a crowded field in his bid for a third House term. The district includes parts of Detroit, Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe Woods and Grosse Pointe Shores.

Banks has previous convictions in financial matters.
