Cleanup Continues After July Storms In Upper Peninsula

HOUGHTON, Mich. (AP) -- Cleanup is continuing in Michigan's Upper Peninsula following damaging storms that hit last month.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says Friday that the Emily Lake State Forest Campground in Houghton County will remain closed for the next few weeks as work continues. The DNR says that some of the sites will be closed until spring.

Storms hit July 21. Straight-line winds of 90 mph were recorded at the Emily Lake State Forest Campground, located south of Twin Lakes State Park. Falling trees hit two travel campers at the park. No one was injured. Crews have been working to remove hazardous trees.

The Upper Peninsula has been hit hard by summer storms. A July 11 storm dumped nearly a foot of rain in some areas and caused other damage.
