Illegal Immigrant Charged With Indecent Exposure After Allegedly Masturbating At Meijer

ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) - An El Salvadorian man — who authorities say is in the U.S. illegally — has been arrested for allegedly exposing himself and more at a Meijer in Rochester Hills.

The Oakland County Sheriff's office received a tip from a resident over the weekend who recognized 35-year-old Daniel Torres-Rivas at another local store after seeing him in security camera photos in the media.

Officers went to the house where Torres-Rivas had been staying in Pontiac, but couldn't find him. He later turned himself in.

The alleged indecent exposure incident happened last Monday, Aug. 15, at the supercenter on Rochester Road.

According to sheriff's officials,  Torres-Rivas approached the 24-year-old victim as she was shopping and stood near her. As she looked back toward the suspect, she "observed him exposing his genitals and actively making sexually explicit motions in her direction."

The woman called 911 but responding deputies couldn't find the man she described. They did, however, recover some "physical biological evidence at the scene."

While he was being booked on the exposure charge, Torres-Rivas provided an El Salvador passport as his ID, according to the sheriff's office.

Detectives contacted the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office to check on his status and found that he was from El Salvador didn't have a visa.

On Saturday, a $1,000 bond was set at an arraignment on one count of aggravated indecent exposure, a misdemeanor. On Monday, Torres-Rivas was picked up from the Oakland County Jail by ICE Agents on charges of entering the county illegally.

He remains in federal custody.

"I find it completely disgusting and sad that this individual, who is illegally in our country, felt comfortable enough here to harass a woman in a very public store by masturbating to completion," said Sheriff Mike Bouchard, in a statement. "I thank the tipster who helped us lock up this sick pervert."

There was no contact between Torres-Rivas and his alleged victim and no one was hurt.
