Couples Who Watch Porn Double The Risk Of Divorce Says Study

DETROIT (WWJ) - A new study finds pornography can destroy your happy marriage.

Married couples who watch porn almost double their risk of getting divorced -- according to a report by the American Sociological Association.

The research, partly titled, "Till Porn Do Us Part?" shows that the risk nearly tripled for women who watched porn.

Local psychiatrist Gerald Shiener is not surprised by the results:

"My experience has been that couples who start watching porn are doing so because they become bored with each other and they are looking for more excitement, more stimulation and they are aware of the fact that there is something missing in their relationship," says Shiener. "So that's often a sign of a relationship that's failing."

He says watching porn can lead to curiosity and infidelity. "They are already starting to distance themselves from one another -- already starting to dismantle the relationship."

"Watching porn separately from your spouse is often an indication that you are missing something or that there is something missing in the relationship and it's an attempt to fill it in - it's an attempt to find it by yourself -- rather than address the issue with your partner."

The study shows the increase of divorce was greater for younger adults versus older ones -- and lower for weekly church-goers.
