Another Ex-Detroit Principal Sentenced In Corruption Case

DETROIT (AP) - Another former Detroit public school principal has been sentenced in a bribery and kickback scheme involving a former district vendor.

Beverly Campbell was sentenced to 15 months in prison Wednesday. The 67-year-old pleaded guilty in April to commit bribery. Prosecutors say she took $50,000 in bribes.

She was among a dozen principals and a district administrator charged along with vendor Norman Shy.

The government says bogus invoices were submitted for paper and other supplies. In exchange, the school employees received gift cards, cash and checks from Shy. The scheme cost the Detroit district nearly $3 million.

Shy was sentenced to five years in prison. All but one principal has pleaded guilty.

Former Bennett Elementary principal Josette Buendia did not take a plea deal and faces a Dec. 5 trial.
