Woman Killed, 3 Others Injured In Crash At Busy Intersection In Troy

TROY (WWJ) - Police say a driver may have suffered a medical event before crashing into another vehicle at a busy intersection in Troy, killing one person.

The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday at Livernois and Wattles roads.

According to police, a silver Ford Escape occupied by three people was traveling westbound on Wattles and attempting to turn left onto southbound Livernois when it was struck by a blue Chrysler Town and Country, which was traveling northbound.

Police say it appears that the driver of the Chrysler, a 65-year-old Sterling Heights man, may have suffered a medical event prior to the crash and failed to stop for a red traffic signal before striking the Ford.

All four people involved in the crash suffered significant injuries and were transported to area hospitals.

A 70-year-old woman from India, identified as Shyamala Ramachandran, died from her injuries. Police say she was sitting in the back seat of the Ford and wasn't wearing a seat belt.

The other three people, including a 35-year-old Wisconsin resident and a 77-year-old Troy resident, remain hospitalized.

Police say neither alcohol or drugs appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Detectives are looking to speak with anyone who might have witnessed the accident. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 248-524-3477.
