Student Struck, Killed While Crossing Street Near High School In Macomb

MACOMB (WWJ) - Authorities say a 14-year-old girl has died after she was struck by a vehicle driven by a classmate near a high school in Macomb.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. Friday on Heydenreich Road at Vine Drive, between 21 Mile and 22 Mile roads.

According to police, 14-year-old Victoria Cartwright was either walking across Heydenreich Road or was in the roadway when she was struck by a southbound-traveling 2016 Jeep Wrangler, driven by a 16-year-old girl.

Both girls were on their way to Dakota High School, along 21 Mile, at the time of the crash.

Cartwright was transported to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital where she died from her injuries.

"This is definitely a tragedy... especially when it's young kids. It really gets in the stomach and turns it," said Sheriff Anthony Wickersham. "It hits hard and it hits home with most of those students there."

The driver and a passenger, also a 16-year-old girl, were not injured.

"Parents did come, they were both brought here to the sheriff's office and our investigators are interviewing them," said Wickersham. "We're looking for any other witnesses that may have seen the accident or have information about the accident. So, this will be an investigation that will go on for a few days so we can find out exactly what transpired out there."

Wickersham said at this point, it's too early to speculate what may have led to the accident, such as distracted driving.

"At 7 a.m., it is dark in that area so really, to try and come on out and say what the actual factors are or what the cause was, is really too early in the investigation," he said.

Heydenreich Road was closed for several hours as police investigate the crash scene, but has since reopened.

A GoFundMe account has been established to help Cartwright's family with funeral costs. Click here to donate.
