WESTLAND (WWJ) – It’s a great deal for veterans and furry friends alike.

The Pets for Patriots adoption program offers service men and women in any branch of military, at any stage of their career, discounts on dogs and cats.

“The program brings together heroes who seek companionship, and pets who need a hero,” said Kathy Bilitzke, Director of Marketing & Communications for the Michigan Humane Society.

Marine Veteran Corey Chamberlain of Westland met his 3-year-old Doberman/Shepherd mix named Phoenix at the Michigan Humane Society about a month ago.

He was going to wait a little before adopting him, but: “Leaning over just to say bye to him, my dog tags fell out of my shirt,” Chamberlain said. “And the lady’s like, oh, you know we have a program, Pets for Patriots. It helps Veterans, you know, adopting a dog.”

So he filled out the paperwork and took Phoenix home.

“It’s like having a friend that’s there,” Chamberlain told WWJ’s Zahra Huber.

“Even with family, like, sometimes you still have that…you feel alone type situation; like people don’t understand,” he said. “Pets are a great companion. You don’t even have to say anything. They just pick up on your emotions and your feelings.”

Chamberlain also got free food and treats through the program, and help with the veterinary bill.

Proof of military service (active, reserve, retired or a veteran) is required and qualifying adoptable dogs and cats are either two years or older, over 40 pounds or have special needs.
