Piranhas On Belle Isle: Exhibit Reveal Part Of Aquarium Fundraising Event

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The Belle Isle Aquarium is hosting an evening event next month that includes a reveal of a new red-bellied piranha exhibit.

The Belle Isle Conservancy says funds from the Dec. 2 "Deeper Dive: Bite of the Amazon" will help pay for the operation and maintenance of the aquarium.

Piranhas in the exhibit are from the Amazon River in South America.

Aquarium general manager Fred Huebener says "the concept is to host such an event several times a year to celebrate new exhibits and to bring awareness to the variety of species" housed at the aquarium.

Belle Isle is a popular island park in the Detroit River. The nonprofit Belle Isle Conservancy is responsible for generating funds for improvements and cultural programs on the park.

Deeper Dive: A Bite of the Amazon takes place on Friday, Dec. 2 from 8 to 11 p.m. Tickets start at $40 a piece. Click here for more information.
