DELTA TOWNSHIP (WWJ) – One person is dead and two are hospitalized after a crash Thursday morning along I-96 near Lansing.

It happened at around 7:25 a.m. on the eastbound side of the freeway, between St. Joe Hwy. and eastbound I-496 in Delta Township.

According with investigators with the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office Delta Patrol, a westbound SUV lost control, crossed the median, rolled and hit another SUV that was traveling eastbound.

The passenger in the westbound SUV died at the scene. Both drivers were taken by EMS to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

Eastbound I-96 traffic was being routed to eastbound 496, and sheriff’s officials said eastbound I-96 would remain closed at the scene into the early afternoon. Meantime. Westbound I-96, meantime, had only one lane open.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area.
