Lake Orion School Board Votes To Close Elementary School

LAKE ORION (WWJ) - An elementary school in Lake Orion is closing after this year.

After hearing from several parents Wednesday night, the Lake Orion School Board voted to close Pine Lake Elementary following for the 2017-18 school year. A letter on the district's website says the restructuring plan is an effort to minimize the impact of reduced revenues and declining enrollment.

As a result of the closing, administrators will redistrict all students from kindergarten to eighth grade to six neighborhood schools. The board will also be considering the sale of other district "assets," but no final decision on that has been made.

"These decisions were made after months of numerous and long discussions amongst the School Board on what is best for the entire school district over the long term," Superintendent Marion Ginopolis said in a statement. "We recognize these changes will have a significant impact on many people. Over the next several months we will be working diligently to make the transition for students and their families, as well as our teachers and support staff, as smooth as possible."
