'Today Is A Great Day': Police Save 4-Month-Old With CPR
DETROIT (WWJ) - A frantic mom pulled over to the side of the road after noticing that her baby was not breathing -- but fortune was on her side as two officers witnessed the scene and ran to help.
Officers Charles Spruce and his partner Douglas Nichols were at the right place at the right time as they came across a crowd of people on Conant near Six Mile surrounding a mom desperate for help for her child.
"We started doing CPR on the girl, he started telling me we can't wait for EMS, so he was going to pass the baby on to me and I said 'you already started CPR - you keep going, I'll drive,'" said Spruce.
Nichols continued doing CPR in the front seat with the baby on his lap as Spruce drove to the hospital.
"The training kicked in," Nichols tells WWJ's Stephanie Davis. "We went from zero to 60 in about two seconds."
Nichols said the mother was overcome with gratitude for the life saving duo.
"The mother said, 'thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, especially when I was going down the hallway - when that baby opened up and started crying."
