P.J. Fleck: We Deserve To Be In The Gosh Darn Cotton Bowl, Period

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) -- Western Michigan football coach P.J. Fleck made sure there was no confusion on Friday night after his team won the Mid-American Conference Championship.

He wants to play in the Cotton Bowl.

The Broncos (13-0) completed their undefeated season at Ford Field with a 29-23 win over Ohio. Speaking to reporters following the game, Fleck made his thoughts about his team's legitimacy very clear.

"We deserve to be in the gosh darn Cotton Bowl, period," Fleck said at his press conference. "Write it down."

Western has gotten love from the Associated Press college football polls this season, coming into Friday's game ranked No. 13 in the country. But the College Football Playoff committee has been harsher on Fleck's squad, ranking them No. 17 and often jockeying them around with other Group of Five teams.

Only one Group of Five team -- one that plays in a mid-major conference such as the MAC -- will likely earn a bid to a New Year's Six Bowl game (Rose, Sugar, Orange or Cotton). The Fiesta and Peach Bowls will be played as the College Football Playoff semifinals this year.

"We went 13-0, we're the best Group of Five team in 2016, period. We should be in the Cotton Bowl. End of story, Row the boat," Fleck told ESPN after the game.

The Group of Five consists of the MAC, Conference USA, American Athletic Conference, Mountain West Conference and the Mountain West Conference.

Many believe Fleck is destined to take a bigger coaching job at another school, but he has maintained that he is focused on the here and now.
