Michigan To Begin Recount; Legal Fight Moves To Pennsylvania

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A judge has ordered a hand recount of Michigan's presidential results to begin by noon Monday, and the Green Party is trying to force a federal court order for a statewide recount in Pennsylvania.

Green Party candidate Jill Stein is trying to force recounts in three states. The count is underway in Wisconsin. In Nevada, a partial recount of the race was requested by independent presidential candidate Roque De La Fuente.

Judge Mark Goldsmith issued his ruling early Monday morning that rejected an effort by state officials to wait two business days to get started hand-counting about 4.8 million ballots.

The move increases the chances that the state could complete the count ahead of a Dec. 13 deadline.

In Macomb County, where voters helped deliver last month's victory to Donald Trump's campaign, County Executive Mark Hackel says he has no problem with the court-ordered recount.

Hackel compares the recount to sports - saying it's no different than a football coach challenging the referee's call.

"Who am I to judge?" asked Hackel. "I would just have a thought - or and opinion that it isn't going to make much of an impact - if it does, well, once again people can be proved wrong."

He says if it's a legal option, it should be allowed to happen.

Oakland County Clerk Lisa Brown says she's confident there were no problems with the election.

"We have so many checks and balances in place that it would make it hard for someone to do that but we are eager to get to work and show how our election worked out," said Brown.

Brown says there are a number of things that have to be checked out before the votes can be recounted. That includes making sure the voting boxes weren't tampered with.

Stein's lawyers argued that waiting until Wednesday would cut it too close.
