Police: 13-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shot While Teens Played With Grandma's Gun

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed by another teen playing with his grandmother's gun, according to police.

Detroit Police Director Michael Woody a group of teenage boys, who live at their grandmother's house, discovered the loaded weapon on their grandmother's nightstand after she'd left for work on Monday.

"They decided at that point they were going to call over a friend to play some video games and possibly scare him with the gun," Woody said. "When the friend arrived at the location, they did start playing with the gun; and ultimately the gun did fire, striking the young man in the chest."

The 911 call came in at 1:15 p.m., Woody said. Responding police officers administered CPR to try to save the teen, but were unsuccessful.

It's not clear how the shooting occurred, Woody said. The teens, along with their grandmother, have been taken into custody as an investigation continues.

"We will be seeking a warrant; charges against her," Woody said. "We also have the teenage boys — 13, 14 and 15-year-old — detained for questioning."

Woody said the two officers who were at the scene will receive counseling for the "traumatic and tragic scene that they have witnessed."

"It was very evident that they were...hurting a little bit from that. So we want to make sure that they're taken care of as well," Woody said.

No names have been released.

Woody reminds gun owners to always use gun locks or to store firearms in a locked safe. Free gun locks, and training on how ot use them, are available at Detroit police precincts.
