DETROIT (WWJ) – A suspect has been arrested after police say a teenage boy was fatally shot over a pair of Air Jordan sneakers on Detroit’s west side.

Police said it happened shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday in the 15000-block of Pinehurst, near Fenkell just east of Meyers Rd., which is near Loyola High School.

According to investigators, the 17-year-old victim was in the area in his car, attempting to sell a pair of shoes to some unknown suspects, when something went wrong. Shots were fired, the teen was struck and killed, and the shoes were stolen, police said.

A 20-year-old man who was in the car with the teen was also shot, police said. His condition is unknown at this time.

Loyola High School was placed on lockdown as a precaution following the incident. However, police said the teen killed was not a student there and the shooting was not connected to the school.

An investigation is ongoing. A small crowd was gathering late in the afternoon where police had cordoned off the area.

“With the body still on the scene you have now grief-stricken parents and relatives arriving,” WWJ’s Stephanie Davis reported, shortly after 5 p.m.

“How do we change that? Young men are dying everyday from Detroit to Chicago, from Boston to Los Angeles …what’s the answer?” asked a neighborhood resident.

Police said the suspect in custody is a 19-year-old man. No names have been released.

You want to change that? You be parents and raise your kids with the truth, shoes do not make the man. The man makes the shoes. Also, how long will Jordan make money of dead kids? It needs to end. Why does he not come out and say enough is enough? Oh yea, black on black crime dont matter….whatever. It matters to me!
