Traffic is effected on both sides of the freeway.

"There was a report earlier of at least one injury-- it sounds like there might be more than one thing going on over there," said Lt. Joseph Brodeur with Michigan State Police.

MDOT says the semi was heading westbound when it went off the road. The accident closed westbound I-696 at Greenfield and eastbound at Southfield road.

M-DOT spokesperson Diane Cross telling WWJ around 8 p.m. the amount of cleanup and time frame is still being determined.  "That's something to be determined after the crash is cleaned up -- some of the underneath parts of the cab -- auto parts ... may be under there, until all the other vehicles are pulled out of there - then they'll have to determine what can be done," said Cross. "Then there may be a number of things depending on the damage they may bring in barrels just to block it until they can come back in the morning - during daylight and do the repair. If it's so severe they may bring a crew out tonight and put up fuel bars that go across concrete barriers to handle that temporarily."

No time frame on when the freeway will reopen.
