Pet Pit Bull Shot While Chasing Carjacking Suspect From Yard

ROMULUS(AP) — A man says his pet pit bull was shot in the face while chasing a suspected carjacker who later held a boy hostage inside the dog owner's Detroit-area home.

Kyle Brown tells officials that his dog, Petey, was wounded Friday by the man who climbed a fence into Brown's backyard in Romulus and confronted Brown. The dog had to be put down due to the gunshot wound.

The man fled over the fence to escape the dog, but state police say he exchanged gunfire with officers and re-entered Brown's yard.

Brown says he and his son were able to leave the house before the gunman entered, but his son's 7-year-old friend still was inside. The boy was released by the gunman hours later.

The gunman eventually surrendered to police.
