$1M Bond Set For Father Over Death of Daughter Walking From Crash

ROMULUS (AP) — A judge has set bond at $1 million for a man facing murder charges after his 7-year-old daughter was fatally struck when she went for help after he crashed a stolen van on Interstate 94 in suburban Detroit.

Forty-seven-year-old Wilburt Dion Thomas of Detroit appeared via video before a judge Saturday, a day after he prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and other counts.

Prosecutors say Thomas was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana when he crashed about 2 a.m. July 15 into a disabled car parked on I-94's shoulder. Authorities say he allowed DeSandra Thomas to walk away when she was hit by another vehicle.

The judge entered a not guilty plea for Thomas and set his next court hearing for Aug. 22.
