Gov. Snyder Unveils Plans For Broadband Throughout Michigan
LANSING (AP) — Gov. Rick Snyder has unveiled a plan that would make universal access to high-speed internet available throughout Michigan.
Snyder's office says the Michigan Broadband Roadmap sets the path for improving access and adoption of broadband.
Michigan currently ranks 30th in the nation for broadband availability. More than 350,000 households -- mostly in rural areas -- lack access to high-speed internet service. Another two million households only have access to a single, terrestrial internet service provider.
Snyder's office says there is approximately $2.5 billion in potential economic opportunities available for these regions if that gap is closed.
Recommendations include calling for greater investment in broadband to improve community and economic development, and promoting and building awareness for low-cost broadband subscription programs.
