Latest: 16-Year-Old Fatally Stabbed At Fitzgerald High In Warren, Suspect And Victim Dated The Same Guy

WARREN (AP) — The Latest on the stabbing of a 16-year-old girl at a high school in suburban Detroit:

1:25 p.m.

Police say a 16-year-old girl who was stabbed to death at a Detroit-area high school and the 17-year-old girl suspected in her killing had both dated the same guy.

Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer says the suspect was upset and disturbed when the male student broke up with her and started dating the victim, causing her to stab her love rival Wednesday morning.

Dwyer says the victim was stabbed in the chest at Warren's Fitzgerald High School around 8:30 a.m. and was declared dead at a hospital about an hour later.

He says the suspect will likely be charged with premeditated murder Thursday in the city's district court. She is being held at the police department lockup until the initial hearing.

Authorities say a 16-year-old girl has died after being stabbed by another teenage girl during a fight inside a high school classroom in suburban Detroit.

Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer says the girl was stabbed twice in the chest Wednesday morning at Fitzgerald High School and was pronounced dead about an hour later at a hospital. He says the 17-year-old suspect used a kitchen-style knife.

Dwyer says the students knew each other and suggested the dispute was over a male student. Police say the other girl was taken into custody at the scene.

The school was initially placed on lockdown but students have since been released.

Police say a 16-year-old girl is critically injured after being stabbed by another teenage girl during a fight inside a high school classroom in suburban Detroit.

Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer says a victim was stabbed Wednesday morning by a 17-year-old girl at Fitzgerald High School. He says both are students.

Dwyer told The Detroit News that the injured girl has been taken to a hospital, where she is in critical condition. WWJ-AM reports police say the other girl was taken into custody at the scene.

Fitzgerald Public Schools Superintendent Laurie Fournier said in a statement on the district's website that the school was placed on lockdown. She says student and staff safety is the "number one priority."

Dwyer says police are investigating the circumstances of the stabbing.
