Consumers Energy Allowed To Close Coal Plants, Boost Renewables

LANSING (AP) — Michigan regulators have approved a major utility's plan to phase out its coal-fired power plants and rely increasing on renewable power sources and efficiency to provide electricity.

The Public Service Commission OK'd Consumers Energy's proposal Friday.

As part of the plan, the Jackson-based utility will retire two units near Bay City in 2023. Three remaining generators would close between 2031 and 2040.

The utility plans to add 5,000 megawatts of solar by 2030.

Consumers Energy President and CEO Patti Poppe (PAH'-pee) says the move "truly ushers us into a new era for renewable energy in Michigan."

Consumers distributes power throughout much of the Lower Peninsula.
