Detroit Students Take Part In Survey To Improve Learning Conditions

DETROIT (CBS DETROIT/AP) — In an effort to improve learning conditions, more than 32,000 students have participated in annual surveys aimed at helping the Detroit Public Schools Community District improve learning and student support.

The district says 16,700 families and 5,600 employees also completed the surveys.

Results show that students in third through eighth grades believe academics are more rigorous and that teachers are more likely to support them in understanding classwork.

The 50,000-student district says survey data also shows more families say they would recommend Detroit's public school to other parents. Principals and assistant principals say district support and resources also are more aligned to academic standards.

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti says the district plans an intensive focus on high school students and teachers as it rolls out aligned curriculum in literacy and mathematics "that meet grade level expectations."
