Detroit Seeks To Provide Summer Jobs For 8,000 Teens, Young Adults

DETROIT (AP) — An annual program is expected to provide summer jobs for 8,000 Detroit teenagers and young adults.

Applications for Grow Detroit's Young Talent are being accepted until May 1 for residents ages 14 to 24.

This year marks the program's seventh. The city expects to have provided 50,000 summer jobs since the program started.

Last summer, more than 6,000 jobs were virtual to maintain social distancing protocols due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"We never considered canceling the program for a moment because we want our young people to know the value we place on them," Mayor Mike Duggan said. "We are always grateful to our partners but particularly so last year. Pivoting to an entirely new program at scale in only three months was a remarkable achievement.

"Whatever the status this summer, we will still make sure that our youth have the opportunity to learn new skills and earn a wage," he added.

Sponsors include DTE Energy. The city also is seeking organizations interested in becoming sponsors or providing summer work experiences.

"Our city's youth have come to rely on GDYT and expect it to be there for them," said Marie Hocker, executive director. "We are immensely grateful to our partners who saw it as an imperative to continue to offer these opportunities despite the challenges posed by COVID-19."
