As news of food-borne illnesses continue to fill headlines around the country, more and more people are turning to kosher foods, which are prepared under strict Jewish dietary laws. But whether you practice Judaism or not, eating kosher food may be a better way to eat because of the health benefits to both human and animals. Check out this list for your best bets for kosher restaurants in the metro-Detroit area.

Zeman's is metro-Detroit's oldest kosher bakery. It's located in an unassuming strip mall, but don't let the no-frills interior fool you. Breads are baked fresh daily and include pumpernickel, rye, onion rolls and sweet treats like brownies, doughnuts and pastries. Come early, because freshly-baked New Yorkers and challah don't last long. And during traditional Jewish holidays, seven-layer cakes are scooped up quickly as well. Zeman's is located in Oak Park just a couple miles north of Detroit.
