There is a fast-growing bicycle community emerging in Detroit. From urban riders and mountain bikers to cool neighborhood riding tours, tons of cycling clubs and the Detroit Bike City Expo, Detroit is full of bicyclists. Even groceries and lunch are delivered via bike now. In response to this extensive network of avid bikers, an array of cycling companies with repair facilities have been cropping up throughout the city. Everything from full-service repair to general maintenance can be found at bicycle shops with history to new companies just starting out. Who knows — Detroit may eventually go from being known as the “Motor City” to “Bike City.”

Wheelhouse Detroit offers bike service and repair such as adjusting gears and fixing flats to general maintenance. The shop also provides tune-ups and cleanings. The consultation fee for repairs varies in price from $5 to $25. Additionally, tours are available and range from five to 30 miles. Wheelhouse Detroit offers rentals and sells different brands and styles of bikes including mountain, touring and classic, among others.

The Hub of Detroit is a non-profit bicycle repair shop and much, much more. It opened in 2008 in conjunction with Back Alley Bikes — which has been in operation since 2000. This is a full-service “anything you need for your bike” establishment. The Hub of Detroit can take care of whatever is wrong with your ride. Bring it in and the staff will fix the problem. In a day or two, pick it up and ride off into the sunset. The Hub of Detroit still runs as a collaborative effort with Back Alley Bikes. As an added bonus, it provides complimentary air for your tires.

Bike Tech opened in 1985. This company specializes in bicycle assembly and reassembly, but it also provides gear adjustments and detailing. The service is fast and the the staff takes pride in their work. The service technicians perform general repair such as fixing flat tires, re-installation of a tube or replacement of a tire. They are capable of working on all styles, from vintage to modern cycles. Bike Tech also restores antique bikes and has extensive historical knowledge about bikes of the past.

Corktown Cycles has a mobile repair service. Request an appointment online via the website or call and a skilled repair person will meet you at your home or an alternate address. The repair man will bring the parts and complete the repair so your bike is ready to ride in no time. Corktown Cycles works on everything from tune-ups to frame repair on a range of styles including vintage bicycles, carbon fiber road bikes and everything in between. Repairs are performed by trained professionals, using the best tools and techniques. Jack’s accepts any make or model for repair. It provides major repairs as well as minor fixes, including tune-ups. Bike repairs are generally completed within 24 hours. Estimates are complimentary and the staff is friendly. The shop carries hybrid, mountain, dual sport, cruiser and road bikes.
