Best Brick Oven Pizzas In The Detroit Area

There's no shortage of pizza joints in metro Detroit. But you won't find a lot of places that feature pizza made in a brick oven, which produces beautiful, tasty pies cooked at high temperatures. Check out these picks for the top brick-oven pizza places in the Detroit area.

Supino Pizzeria is located in Detroit's famed Eastern Market and is widely hailed as one of the best brick-oven pizza spots in the city. On the menu, you'll find an array of red and white pies, as well as a "build your own pizza" option. The signature thin-crust pizzas cooked to a perfect golden brown in the brick oven. If you're looking for one of Supino's best pies, order the City Wing Thing that comes with City Wing's smoked turkey, smoked gouda cheese, cherry peppers, mozzarella and roasted garlic. Supino is closed on Sundays and Mondays, and Saturdays get crowded thanks to the weekly farmer's market.

Buddy's Pizza has been around a while. Its original location opened in 1936 on the corner of Conant Street and Six Mile Road. Buddy's infamous square, brick-oven pizza was revealed in 1946 and it has been one of the top-rated pizza restaurants in Detroit ever since. In fact, Buddy's was named one of the "25 Best Pizzas in America" by GQ Magazine in 2009. Now boasting nine different locations throughout metro Detroit, you'll find specialty pizzas like the Margherita, Chicken Fajita and Greek. However, if looking for a taste of the city, order the Detroiter with cheese, pepperoni, tomato-basil sauce, shaved parmesan cheese and Buddy's spice blend.

Gracie See is a low-key pizza joint located on Greenfield Road that specializes in Italian-style, brick-oven pizza. Gracie See won second place for "Best Traditional Pizza" at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas back in 2008. In addition to the specialty pies you'll find on the menu, there are also a variety of pasta dishes. For a great take on a classic, order the Sicilian with sausage, tomatoes, onions and garlic. Gracie See is open until midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, where it transforms into a retro-1970's sports bar.

Although about a half-hour drive from downtown Detroit, Tivoli's is a must-stop pizzeria for the best in brick-oven pies. Tivoli's offers Chicago-style, New York-round and Sicilian-square pizza, as well as a variety of calzones. The pizzas come in two sizes, large and small, and are in the $10 to $20 range. The dough is hand tossed and the ingredients are fresh. Best of all, the wood brick oven yields perfectly-cooked pies gleaming with buffalo mozzarella and fresh tomato sauce. Tivoli's is small and cozy on the inside, so come early if you're going to eat there. It's open seven days a week.

Located in Midtown in Detroit's Cass Corridor, Motor City Brewing Works is a restaurant and brewery that's been around since 1994. The pizza kitchen features a huge brick oven that produces piping hot pies. Prices are very reasonable in the $7 to $10 range and you can choose from options like Margherita, Mediterranean, Roasted Pear & Fig or the Sopla Fuego, a delectable combination of habanero tomato sauce, anejo queso, chorizo sausage, red onions, jalapeno peppers, sour cream, cilantro and lime.
