Best Craft Shows In Metro Detroit

It's summer in the city and time to hit up a few craft shows, but which events are the best to check out? Read on for the best craft shows in the metro Detroit area.

Dates: Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19, 2016, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Lac Ste. Claire Fine Arts Fair will be taking place at Veterans Memorial Park at Masonic (13 1/2 Mile) and Jefferson, in St. Clair Shores. The park is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, and both parking and entry are free; there is a lot across Jefferson Avenue from the park available for parking. The fair is a fine arts fair, and you'll find booths selling ceramics and pottery, photography, metals, glasswork and jewelry, among other mediums.

The Detroit Urban Craft Fair technically isn't a summer fair, but is worth attending. It takes place at the Masonic Temple in December each year, and it was started in 2006. Admission is $1, and free for children ages 12 and younger. The DUCF is held annually and is a two-day "alternative craft fair" with over 100 crafters and artists. Interactions between artists and buyers are encouraged, and the fair gives crafters the chance to reach a large audience. The DUCF's mission is to "elevate handmade goods as an alternative to mass-produced items, support and elevate small craft business by providing a place for them to sell during the busy holiday shopping season, and raise awareness of handmade craft."

Dates: September 16-18, 2016

The DIY Street Fair is an annual event that takes place on the east side of Woodward, between 9 Mile and Troy St. About 75,000 people attend every year, and there are usually about 145 artist booths. The festival also has music performances (about 25 bands per year) and food vendors.

Date: August 6-7, 2016 - 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Aug. 6), 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Aug. 7)

The Belle Isle Art Fair takes place in Belle Isle Park this August and is free to attend, but there is a State Park access fee if you are driving (a one-day pass is $9 for non-residents, or an annual pass is $31; an annual pass for Michigan residents is $11); passes can be bought at the gate. Mediums range from jewelry to ceramic to glass to leather goods, and the Art Fair has a variety of booths to browse.

The Milford Memories Summer Festival includes an Art in the Village art show, as well as food and entertainment. There's also a fun run, fishing tournament, basketball tournament and more activities. More than 300 artists from both the U.S. and Canada participate in the art show, and it's open the entire weekend of August 12th through 14th.
