Best Places For Knitting In The Detroit Area

Detroit has many knitting classes and places to find supplies scattered throughout the city and surrounding area. Whether you are just starting out as a beginner knitter or you've been knitting for many years, here's a few of the best places in the Detroit Metro.

City Knits

City Knits has luxury yarns as well as a friendly staff. Its classes range from beginning knitting to advanced to "Kidz Knit," and its schedule can be found on the website. City Knits carries a variety of products along with local, Michigan-made yarns. City Knits also sells books on knitting and has space for knitters to work within the store.

Knit A Round

Knit A Round can be found in the Traver Village Shopping Center, just north of the University of Michigan's North Campus. This shop was started in May of 2000 by Sheri Preketes and Carrie Pozza, and it provides classes for both beginner and advanced knitters. Group classes as well as private lessons are offered. Knit A Round also hosts parties for adults and the younger set and will keep the store open later than regular hours to accommodate these parties.

Skeins on Main is in downtown Rochester and offers a cozy place to work on your knitting. The shop originally opened two storefronts away from its current location, but soon felt the need to expand and moved to the space at 428 South Main Street. It carries a variety of fabrics, from cashmere to wool yarn, and also hosts classes on-site, which run for six weeks. Customers will have the same day/time and instructor for whatever class(es) they choose.

The Knitting Circle resides in downtown Milford, next to PNC Bank and the town gazebo. Store owners Lynn and Bill Hess host knitting circles and there's never a time limit for sitting and knitting or crocheting. The Knitting Circle has classes for all ages, from adult to children, and sometimes puts on different events like sip-n-knit, trunk shows and workshops. Classes run about five to six weeks and there are some offered for those who have no knitting experience whatsoever. Knitting Boot Camp, which starts this month, promises to turn you into an "experienced knitter" after only eight class sessions.

Stitch In Time has been open for more than 19 years and is located in downtown Howell. Charlene Hatfield is the owner and has been certified by the Yarn Council of America. She is available for advice and help to any knitters that visit the store. Here you will find books and patterns and a plethora of materials for anyone looking to start a knitting project. Classes are open to all levels of knitters, but if you have never knitted before, you will start with the slippers class. Classes are $15 per two-hour session and are 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays.
